Lillafured and Miskolc

Thursday 2 June

Today, Daniel kindly offered to take Amanda's classes so we could go out for the day.  Our destinations were Lillafured and then on to the cave baths at Miskolc (Mishcoltz).  Lillafured is approximately 2 hours drive north west from Mariapocs.  It is a very pretty mountain village with a lake, waterfall and a large impressive hotel which overlooks the lake.

Amanda parked the car and we walked down the hill to take a look at the lake which looked very pretty.  There were a number of people who had hired rowing boats and were rowing around the lake.  We chose instead to go and have lunch in the hotel garden where we could watch the activity on the lake.

We were in the middle of lunch when all of a sudden we heard a shout and looked up to see a man in the water at the base of a rock wall.  A woman (we presumed his wife) was standing on the roadside three metres above him.  He was quite elderly so we think he may have overbalanced and fallen in.  His wife hurried round to some stairs and climbed down to help her husband out of the water.  He seemed to be OK as he climbed back up the stairs and wandered off.

After lunch, we walked back up to the car and then carried on to Miskolc which is only about 12km away.  The cave baths were fantastic.  The water is thermal at a temperature of 30 deg C and run they through a natural cave.  So the first section of the baths is a swim through that is roughly circular with the walls and roof being natural sandstone.  At a couple of different points, you can climb out of the water and walk through to another set of pools which are warmer.  Here  is the web site for the baths.

It is an amazing facility and seemed to sort out a bit of a problem I'd been having with my back since getting off the plane - it is one of Amanda's favourite places to visit and we can certainly see why.
