Derek's birthday today! As Amanda had some work to do for her uni course, Daniel drove Derek and me to Eger. It is the second largest city in northern Hungary and was first formed in the 10th century but has been inhabited since the stone age. It's main attractions are the castle, of which only some walls and fragments of buildings remain and the huge, ornately decorated basillica.

The town itself is very pretty with buildings painted in yellow, ochre and blues and lots of little wrought iron balconies.
It is in a wine growing area so once you get off the tollway, the countryside is dotted with grapevines. It is not possible to visit the vineyards as there is no concept of cellar doors here so you buy wine from wine shops or supermarkets.
Daniel gave us a guided tour of the town as he had been there previously with people from Mariapocs and so knew all the sights to see.
We got home about 7 to find Amanda had gone to the local shop and bought a birthday cake for Derek which was very sweet of her. So to celebrate, we drove to Nyiregyhaza for dinner and then home for cake.
